Collaborate with surgeons and dentists to optimize, develop and implement anesthesia plans
Ensure safe and effective delivery of anesthesia by following established protocols and guidelines
Perform pre-operative assessments and provide education to patients regarding options and potential risks
Maintain accurate documentation of anesthesia administration, patient responses and any adverse events
Stay up to date with evident based research in anesthesia techniques, medications and equipment

Job Qualifications

CRNA – LCMC Health Corporate – Part Time

The CRNA administers anesthesia for all types of surgical cases in various settings in accordance with their expertise. Administers anesthesia in four general categories pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation, anesthesia induction, maintenance and emergence, post-anesthetic care, peri anesthetic and clinical support functions.

This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this department. This is not an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities, and LCMC Health reserves the right to amend and change responsibilities to meet organizational needs as necessary.

GENERAL DUTIES

Selects, obtains and administers the anesthetic, adjuvant drugs and fluid necessary to manage the anesthetic. Maintain the patient’s physiologic homeostasis and to correct abnormal responses to the anesthesia or surgery.

Selects, applies and inserts appropriate non-invasive and invasive monitoring modalities for collecting and interpreting patient physiological data.

Manages patient’s airway and pulmonary status using endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, pharmacological support, respiratory therapy or extubating.

Releases or discharges patients from a post-anesthesia care area, provides post-anesthesia follow-up evaluation and care related to anesthesia side effects or complications.

Orders, initiates or modifies pain relief therapy, through the utilization of drugs, regional anesthetic techniques or other accepted pain relief modalities, including epidural analgesia.

Responds to emergency situations by providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids or drugs or using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.

Provides clinical support services outside of the operating room, including but not limited to radiology, endoscopy, emergency department or invasive labs.

Provides consultation and implementation of respiratory and ventilatory care upon request or referral for these services. Identify and manage emergency situations, including the initiation or participation in cardiopulmonary resuscitation that involves airway maintenance, ventilation, tracheal intubation, pharmacologic, cardiopulmonary support, management of blood, fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance.

Additional nurse anesthesia responsibilities which are within the expertise of the individual CRNA, as authorized by Medical Staff and stated in the policy and procedure manuals.

Performs clinical and didactic teaching, supervision and evaluation of students and interdepartmental liaising. Is a member of departmental committees and research participant.

1. Maintains Patient safety at all times.

4. Takes appropriate precautions to minimize risks of infection of patients, and other health care professionals.

6. Participates in the pre-anesthetic evaluation of the patients and the selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.

7. Performs appropriate techniques of the anesthetic plan such as, but not limited to, insertion of intravenous catheters, insertion of invasive monitoring catheters according to established protocol; endotracheal intubation and extubation; performing arterial punctures for interpretation of arterial blood gases.

8. Monitors the patient’s physical response to the anesthetic and informs the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist of any adverse condition. Manage the anesthesia process to include induction, maintenance, and emergence of general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases. Recognize abnormal patient responses to anesthesia or to any adjunctive medication or form of therapy. Initiate corrective measures. Determine the need for additional laboratory tests and provide resuscitative care as necessary. Evaluate and manage the patient in the immediate post-operative period.

9. Administers IV fluids relative to the patient’s medical history and surgical procedure. Administer blood products after obtaining a hematocrit and then consultation with the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist.

10. Documents the patient status in the anesthesia record appropriately.

11. Performs all required safety and performance checks on anesthesia-related equipment and verify the appropriate supplies before initiating care. Procure and assemble equipment and supplies as indicated if anesthesia tech is not available.

12. Reviews appropriate documentation for informed consent and identify appropriate surgical site during SBAR with circulating RN and holding room RN. Participates in surgical pause in the OR with entire surgical team in accordance with departmental and regulatory compliance standards.

13. Communicates appropriately with all individuals involved in the peri-operative and post-operative care of the patient.

14. In a life-threatening emergency, functions responsibly by providing anesthesia care in the absence of an anesthesiologist.

15. Assists with the teaching and evaluation of newly-hired CRNAs, GRNAs, SRNAs in the clinical area.
