A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) in an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who practices both autonomously and in collaboration with a variety of health providers on the interprofessional team to deliver high-quality, holistic, evidence-based anesthesia and pain care services.

The CRNA cares for patients at all acuity levels across the lifespan in a variety of settings for procedures including, but not limited to, surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and pain management.

JOB-SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Periodic pre-anesthesia assessment and evaluation of the patient.
• Obtains informed consent for anesthesia and related services.

• Selects, obtains, orders, and administers preanesthetic medication or treatment.

• Develops and implements an anesthesia care plan.

• Selects, obtains, prepares, and uses equipment, invasive and non-invasive monitors, supplies, and drugs for the administration of sedation, anesthesia and performs safety checks as needed.

• Selects, orders, obtains, and administers analgesic and anesthetic agents, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids, or blood products necessary to provide anesthesia services.

• Performs all aspects of airway management, including fiberoptic intubation.

• Facilitates emergence and recovery from anesthesia by evaluating patient response, and selecting, ordering, and administering medications, fluids, and ventilator support to maintain patient stability during transfer.

• Initiates and administers post-anesthesia pharmacological or fluid support of the cardiovascular system.

• Initiates and administers respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation in the post-anesthesia period.

• Implements acute and chronic pain management modalities.

• Manages emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining disposition of patients, including providing airway management, administration of emergency drugs and fluids, and using basic and advanced cardiac life support techniques.

• Supports patient safety when performing his or her job functions and through participation in facility, department, or unit patient safety initiatives.

• Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.

• Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.

• Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.

The Centra Southside division of Centra Medical Group (CMG) anesthesia offers a care team model practice opportunity for the experienced CRNA who enjoys challenging cases, regional anesthesia, and other procedures. One Anesthesiologist currently supervises a mix of full time and PRN CRNAs staffing four ORs, a busy two room endoscopy suite, a bronchoscopy suite, and labor and delivery. Surgeons, hospitalists, and ER physicians round out the care team model when no anesthesiologist is available. Three general surgeons, three OB-Gyns, one urologist, two orthopedic surgeons, two ophthalmologists, one gastroenterologist, one pediatric dentist, and one pulmonologist offer a great case mix. Cardiac team to soon need anesthesia staffing for TEE. No hearts, no heads, and very rare trauma.

CRNAs have lots of opportunity for independence, regional anesthesia procedures, and central venous access procedures. First call is taken by the CRNA staff with back up call provided by experienced CRNA or anesthesiologist. Anesthesiologist consultation available at all hours from either the medical director or a call physician. Labor epidural, regional block, and central venous access training will be provided but experience, and interest, in these skills is a plus. Familiarity and interest in ERAS protocols is also welcome.
