Penn Medicine, one of the premiere academic medical centers in the country, is seeking PRN CRNAs for the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the following locations:
– Inpatient: The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center
– Outpatient: The Center for Advanced Medicine (Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania campus), Radnor, PA

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) provides anesthesia services across all surgical specialties to patients throughout the health system. The CRNA, working in a collaborative care team model, is responsible for:
– Developing a patient-specific anesthesia plan.
– Managing and maintaining hemostasis intra-operatively.
– Selecting appropriate hemodynamic monitoring.
– Inserting necessary invasive monitors.
– Performing regional anesthesia when appropriate.

Key Responsibilities:
– Make preoperative visits, assess the patient’s condition, and discuss anesthetic management with consultation from the staff anesthesiologist.
– Assemble, prepare, and test supplies and equipment prior to anesthesia.
– Administer various types of anesthesia, including inhalation, intravenous, spinal, epidural, and nerve blocks under supervision of staff anesthesiologists.
– Maintain the anesthetic state and manage emergencies, keeping the anesthesiologist and surgeon informed.
– Record preoperative, operative, and postoperative data, including anesthesia drugs and the patient’s condition.
– Assist in postoperative care, monitoring patients until transferred to recovery or ICU.
– Participate in the care and maintenance of equipment.
– Participate in Quality Improvement activities within the Anesthesia Department.
– Educate interns, residents, medical students, and supportive staff in anesthesia techniques.

Job Description

This position is for a Master’s prepared advanced practice nurse (APN) who provides anesthetic care in collaboration with anesthesiologists, surgeons, physicians, and medical professionals at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute. The CRNA will administer anesthesia and anesthesia-related care in four general categories:
1) pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation,
2) anesthesia induction, maintenance and emergence,
3) post-anesthesia care, and
4) peri-anesthetic and clinical support functions.

The CRNA will perform the following principal responsibilities:
– Perform and document a pre-anesthetic assessment and evaluation of the patient, including requesting consultations and diagnostic studies, administering pre-anesthetic medications and fluids, and obtaining informed consent for anesthesia.
– Develop and implement an age-appropriate and culturally sensitive anesthetic plan, considering the principles of growth and development.
– Select and initiate the planned anesthetic technique, including general, regional, local anesthesia, and intravenous sedation.
– Administer anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, and fluids necessary for the anesthetic.
– Use non-invasive and invasive monitoring modalities and interpret hemodynamic and laboratory data.
– Manage the patient’s airway and pulmonary status during anesthesia.
– Oversee emergence and recovery from anesthesia, ensuring homeostasis and relief from pain or anesthesia side effects.
– Discharge patients from post-anesthesia care and provide post-anesthesia follow-up care.
– Initiate or modify pain relief therapy, including regional anesthetic techniques or labor epidural analgesia.
– Respond to emergency situations with airway management, fluid administration, and basic or advanced cardiac life support.
– Participate in the clinical and didactic education of trainees from multiple disciplines.

Job Qualifications

– Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and a Master’s degree from an accredited school of nurse anesthesia.
– Current licensure from the Maryland State Board of Nurse Examiners to practice nursing and nurse anesthesia.
– Certification or recertification from the National Board on Certification & Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).
– Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
– Ability to perform clinically as a nurse anesthetist in trauma/crisis settings.
– Ability to operate and interpret data from a variety of anesthesia-related equipment.
– Strong verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with clinical staff and other disciplines.
– Knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan and ability to assess patient data accordingly.
